What is Network Speed Test?
A network speed test measures the actual throughput and responsiveness of your internet connection in real time. While your ISP advertises a maximum speed, your real-world performance depends on many factors including network congestion, router hardware, Wi-Fi signal strength, and the distance to the server being tested.
This tool measures three core metrics. Download speed tells you how fast data travels from the internet to your device — critical for streaming, video calls, and browsing. Latency (ping) measures the round-trip time for a small packet to reach a server and return, which determines how responsive your connection feels for gaming and real-time communication. A connection quality rating translates these numbers into a plain-English assessment, helping non-technical users understand whether their connection is suitable for HD streaming, remote work, or online gaming.
Running the test at different times of day can reveal peak congestion periods. Comparing results over a Wi-Fi connection and a wired Ethernet connection can reveal whether your router or cabling is the bottleneck. Frequently Asked Questions
ISPs advertise maximum theoretical speeds. Real-world speeds depend on network congestion, your router, the quality of cabling in your home, and the server location used for the test.
Under 20 ms is excellent. 20–50 ms is good for most online games. Above 100 ms you may notice lag in fast-paced games.
Test both. A significantly higher speed on a wired connection indicates your Wi-Fi router or signal is the bottleneck, not your ISP.
Run it at least three times and take the average. Also test at different times of day to detect peak congestion periods.
