About Snake

Snake is one of the oldest and most recognisable video games there is. You steer a growing line around a walled arena, eating food to score points, and every piece you eat makes you longer. The difficulty comes entirely from your own success: the longer you survive, the less free space you have left to manoeuvre in, until the board you are trying to navigate is mostly your own tail.

This version adds a few modern touches to the classic rules. Walls wrap around, so leaving one edge brings you back in on the opposite side, which opens up escape routes that the original arcade version never allowed. Speed increases every five foods, so a long run gets progressively harder rather than settling into a rhythm. Every fifth food is worth a bonus, which rewards pushing for streaks instead of playing safe. Your high score is saved in your browser.

How to Play Snake

  1. Press an arrow key or WASD to start moving. The snake never stops, so plan before you turn.
  2. Steer into the food to eat it. Each piece adds ten points and one segment to your tail.
  3. Avoid running into your own body. Walls wrap around, so edges are an escape route, not a hazard.
  4. Press Space to pause at any time. Keep going as long as you can — speed rises every five foods.

Tips & Strategy

  • Hug the outer edges early on and keep the middle clear. A tail coiled around the perimeter leaves you far more room than one wandering through the centre.
  • Use the wrap-around deliberately. Crossing an edge is often the fastest way out of a corner you would otherwise be trapped in.
  • As you lengthen, follow your own tail rather than cutting across open space — the tail moves away from you, so it is the one path guaranteed to clear.

Yes. Speed increases every five foods eaten, so a long run demands progressively quicker reactions.

Yes, in your browser local storage. It survives closing the tab, but it is tied to that browser and device — clearing site data resets it.
