What is Barcode Generator?

A barcode is a machine-readable representation of data — numbers, text, or binary — encoded as a pattern of parallel lines (1D barcodes) or a grid of squares (2D barcodes). Barcodes are used in virtually every industry: retail product scanning (UPC, EAN), postal and shipping labels (Code 128, Code 39), healthcare (medication labels, patient wristbands), event ticketing (QR, PDF417), document management, inventory tracking, and library books.

There are dozens of barcode formats, each optimised for a specific use case. EAN-13 and UPC-A are universal product codes used on retail packaging worldwide. Code 128 is used in logistics and shipping for alphanumeric data. Code 39 is used in industrial and healthcare applications. QR codes are the 2D successor to traditional barcodes, capable of storing much more data. PDF417 and DataMatrix are high-density 2D formats used for document IDs and aerospace parts tracking.

Altairys's Barcode Generator supports 15+ barcode formats. Enter your data, select the format, and the barcode renders instantly with the option to download as PNG or SVG. SVG format is resolution-independent, making it perfect for print use — barcodes can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. The tool validates your input against the format requirements (e.g., EAN-13 requires exactly 12 digits, as the 13th is a checksum).

Frequently Asked Questions

UPC-A has 12 digits and is used in the United States and Canada. EAN-13 has 13 digits and is the international standard used worldwide. An EAN-13 barcode starting with 0 is compatible with UPC-A scanners.

For retail products sold in North America, use UPC-A. For international retail, use EAN-13. For internal tracking and inventory, Code 128 is the most versatile. For QR-style 2D codes that work with smartphones, use QR Code.

The barcode image itself (the graphic) is not protected. However, using a UPC/EAN barcode on a retail product requires purchasing a registered GS1 barcode number for your product — the graphic generator only creates the visual, not the registered product code.

Code 128 is a high-density 1D barcode that can encode all 128 ASCII characters. It is widely used in shipping and logistics labels, inventory management, and any application requiring alphanumeric data encoding.
