The Boy Who Cried Wolf

A shepherd boy watched over his village's flock of sheep on a hillside just outside the town, day after day, with nothing much to do.

The hours passed slowly, and the boy grew bored watching sheep graze quietly in the grass with no excitement at all.

One afternoon, just to break the boredom, he cupped his hands and shouted down toward the village: "Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is attacking the sheep!"

The villagers dropped what they were doing and came running up the hill, armed with sticks and shovels, ready to fight off the wolf.

When they arrived, breathless, they found the boy laughing, and not a wolf in sight. "I fooled you!" he grinned.

The villagers were not amused, but they shook their heads, told him not to do it again, and went back down the hill.

A few days later, bored again, the boy played the same trick. "Wolf! Wolf!" he cried, and once again the villagers came rushing up the hillside.

Once again, there was no wolf - just the boy, laughing even harder than before at how easily he'd fooled them a second time.

"You mustn't lie like that," one villager warned as they turned to leave, clearly more irritated this time. The boy only shrugged.

Then, one evening, as the sun began to set, a real wolf crept out of the forest and slipped in among the sheep.

Terrified, the boy ran toward the village as fast as his legs could carry him. "Wolf! Wolf! Please, a real wolf this time!"

But the villagers, remembering his two false alarms, simply shook their heads and went on with their evening chores. "We won't be fooled again," they said.

The boy begged and pleaded, but no one came up the hill this time - not a single person believed him.

By the time the villagers realized the danger had been real all along, the wolf had already scattered the flock and vanished back into the forest.

The boy learned, far too late, a simple truth: once you've lied enough times, no one comes running - not even when you finally tell the truth.
